55+ Blogging FAQs Answered by a 6-Figure Expert Blogger
I get asked a lot of questions about blogging in my free community, in my emails, and in person (once at an airport by one of y’all!). I try to answer everyone individually, but I just don’t have the time!
So, I’ve gathered up the most common questions y’all ask me about getting started, growing your traffic, and monetizing a blog.
If I don’t know the answer, I either haven’t included it or I’ve directed you to one of my many expert blogging friends who can answer you better than I can!
Cause even though I’ve been blogging since 2018, have had more than 12 sites, and have made over 6-figures a year blogging since 2023, I don’t know everything! I know a lot, but some of the super techy stuff or the non-SEO traffic sources just aren’t my gig.
If your question isn’t answered here for whatever reason, head over to my free community and ask there! Remember: there are no stupid questions, only unasked ones.

Beginner Blogging FAQs
How do I start a blog?
There are a few steps to starting a blog. You’ll need to choose a blogging platform, register a domain name, and start sharing your content.
The most popular blogging platforms are WordPress, Blogger, and Wix. All of these platforms offer free plans that you can use to get started.
If you plan to monetize your blog in any way, use WordPress.org to get started.
Beyond these platforms, you’ll also need an idea of what to write about and a passion for marketing or writing.
👩💻 If you’re just getting started, I recommend setting up with Lyrical Host. Use code “sheknowsseo” for 10% off.
Do I need a degree to blog successfully?
No, you do not need a degree to blog. I have seen bloggers with degrees in all sorts of fields, as well as bloggers without any formal education.
The most important thing is that you’re passionate about your topic and that you’re able to share that passion with your readers.
I’ve got 3 degrees in different fields, none of which I blog about or use on a daily basis in my work.
Blogging is like podcasting: anyone with $100 for some basic equipment can do it. As long as you have something valuable to say, you can make it!
How do I get the confidence to blog?
This is a tough one. I think the key is to just start writing, and don’t worry too much about what other people will think.
The more you write, the better you’ll get at it. And, as your blog grows, you’ll naturally become more confident in your voice and your ability to share valuable information with your readers.
I used to be ashamed of being a blogger. In fact, I hid it for a number of years.
Now, I proudly declare that I’m a blogger to everyone I meet.
What really helped me change my mindset was a quote by Jim Carrey. To paraphrase, he said that anyone can fail at their back up career or the boring desk job, so why not try for your dream?
Another thing that helped was finding out that every blogger I met who had success treated their blog like a business.
How could I have a business if I wouldn’t tell people about it??
You’ll deal with naysayers, but ultimately this is about you.
If you want to blog, do the damn thing!
What is the difference between a blog and a website?
A blog is a type of website that focuses on sharing information in the form of articles, or posts.
Websites can be static, meaning they don’t regularly update their content.
A blog, on the other hand, typically has new content added on a regular basis.
Is blogging dead?
No, blogging is very much alive!
There are many successful bloggers who are making a great living from their blog (me included!).
In fact, I believe that blogging is more popular than ever. With the rise of social media, people are used to consuming content in the form of articles and posts.
We’ve survived AI, a global pandemic, countless new social platforms, and so much more! Ultimately, people always come back to long form, written content from real humans.
If you’re thinking about starting a blog, I say go for it!
How do I choose a niche?
First, think about what you’re passionate about. What do you enjoy talking about? What are you an expert in?
Your niche should be something that you can write about for years to come without getting bored.
Second, consider your target audience. Who do you want to reach with your blog?
Third, think about what you can offer that is unique and valuable. What can you share with your readers that they can’t find anywhere else?
But you also want a niche that people will respond to.
If you niche down too far, like 24 year old women with dyed blonde hair who hate eating chicken nuggets but love chicken fingers and did a math degree … well you’ll probably find like 5 people.
But if you blog for millennials with dogs in apartments or couples looking to travel in a van together, you’ll appeal to a medium sized demographic.
You also want a profitable niche.
This is something that has affiliate potential (travel always does with means of travel and hotel bookings) and can bring enough people to your site to get ad income.
👩💻 Learn how to find a profitable niche in the Profitable Part-Time Blogger!
Is it ok if I have more than one niche?
Yes, it’s perfectly fine to have more than one niche! In fact, many bloggers have multiple niches that they write about.
The key is to make sure that your niches are related in some way. For example, you might have a blog about travel and fashion. As long as the audience they serve is the same, you’re gucci!
HOWEVER, I will say that your growth will be WAY harder this way.
It’s much easier to niche down to one focus.
You may be able to expand down the line, but typically starting one fashion blog and one travel blog will perform better.
That’s because your audience will come to your site and know exactly what they’re getting.
Do I need to know how to code to start a blog?
No, you do not need to know how to code to start a blog! You can start a blog using a platform like WordPress.org or Blogger.
Both of these platforms are very user-friendly and easy to use.
You’ll need to learn minor HTML to understand what’s happening on your site. For example, how to insert no-follow links or image alt attributes.
… and even then you basically just click a checkbox on WordPress and you’re good! So “coding” is overstating it for sure.
How much time do I need to commit to my blog every week?
If you’re just starting out, I would recommend committing at least 3-4 hours per week to your blog.
This includes writing posts, promoting your content, and engaging with your audience.
As your blog grows, you may need to increase your time commitment. But in the beginning, 3-4 hours per week is a good starting point.
Blogging is kind of exponential.
You’ll grow to spend a lot of time on your blog, then – if you’ve set up the proper passive strategies I teach in my Profitable Part-Time Blogger program – you can go back to 3-4 hours per week, or even less, while making a full-time income.
Hosting FAQs
What is the best blogging platform?
The best blogging platform is WordPress.org.
WordPress.org is a self-hosted platform, which means you’ll need to purchase your own hosting and domain name.
It can be integrated with any host (I do not recommend buying WordPress.org hosting to use the platform).
WordPress.org is the most popular blogging platform for a reason. It gives you complete control over your blog and allows you to make any design or functionality changes you want.
It’s also very user-friendly and easy to use, even if you’re not a tech-savvy person.
It has the most potential to rank for SEO as well.
Set up your blog with Lyrical and get WordPress.org as your platform for free!
Should I use WordPress.com, Blogger, Wix, or Squarespace?
No, you should not use any of these platforms.
WordPress.org is the only platform I recommend for bloggers who want to be successful in the long run.
The other platforms are either not user-friendly (Wix), have very limited functionality (Blogger), or do not allow you to own your content (Squarespace). WordPress.com is not self-hosted which means you can never run ads.
They may be fine for personal blogs, but if you want to make money blogging or build a successful blog, WordPress.org is the only platform you should use.
What is a blog host and why do I need one?
A blog host is a company that provides the servers and technology needed to run a blog.
You need a blog host because you cannot run a blog without one.
Your blog host will provide you with a domain name, hosting, and possibly email services.
Think of a blog host like the storage locker of your site. It’s where all of the wires and boxes of files and old emails are stored. This allows you to access all of this information and to publish it to the internet.
I recommend using Lyrical for your blog hosting needs. They’re one of the most popular and affordable blog hosts.
They’re more expensive than Bluehost but you’ll save money on a developer, technical support, and plugins that you’ll need to make Bluehost work even half effectively.
Can I host a blog for free?
Yes, you can host a blog for free.
However, I do not recommend it.
Free blog platforms like Blogger and WordPress.com have very limited functionality.
They also own your content, which means they can delete your blog at any time and you have no say in the matter.
If you’re serious about blogging, you should invest in your own hosting and domain name.
It’s not very expensive (less than $100 per year) and it will give you a lot more control over your blog.
When should I switch from my free blog to a self-hosted one?
If you’re serious about blogging and want to be successful, you should switch to a self-hosted blog as soon as possible.
A self-hosted blog will give you more control over your blog and allow you to do more with it.
It’s also necessary if you want to make money blogging.
Domain FAQs
What should I name my blog?
Your blog name should be reflective of your niche.
If I named this site “running in meadows with coffee”, you’d be VERY surprised to find SEO and blogging advice, wouldn’t you?
While it’s fine to not have the word “travel” in your travel blog name, you do want something that is vaguely related.
For travel blog name tips, check out this post.
What is a domain name and why do I need one?
A domain name is your blog’s address on the internet.
It’s what people type into their browser to find your site.
For example, the domain name of this site is “www.sheknowsseo.co”.
Domain names are important because they make it easy for people to find your site.
They’re also important for SEO purposes.
If you want to be successful in the long run, you should invest in your own domain name.
Blogs with “name.blogger.com” look unprofessional and won’t get ranked as highly on Google.
If you can’t pay $15 a year for a domain name, Google isn’t likely to trust you as an authority.
Looking to buy a domain name? I recommend Namecheap!
Which domain suffix should I buy?
I recommend buying a “.com” domain name.
They’re the most popular and most recognizable.
They’re also the easiest to type.
If you can’t get a “.com” domain name, you can try a “.net” or “.org”.
Location specific suffixes like .ca or .co.uk aren’t bad, per say, but some SEO specialists claim that Google prefers .com sites.
My blogs are all on other suffixes (.co and .ca), and I haven’t seen any ranking issues. But if you want to play it safe, stick with .com.
Where do I buy a domain name?
Domain names can be bought from a variety of places, but I recommend Namecheap.
They’re one of the most popular domain name providers and they have a great selection of domain names to choose from.
They also have a very user-friendly interface and are very affordable.
You can buy a domain name from Namecheap for as little as $9.98 per year.
How do I connect my domain name to my blog?
When you buy a domain name from a provider like Namecheap, you need to “point” it to your blog.
This is done by changing the DNS settings.
Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it sounds.
Namecheap has a great article that explains how to do it.
If you’re using a different domain name provider, they should have similar instructions on their site.
Setting Up Your Blog FAQs
How do I make my blog look good?
One of the best things about WordPress is that there are so many themes and plugins available.
A theme is a pre-designed template that you can install on your blog to change its appearance.
Plugins are small pieces of software that add additional functionality to your blog.
There are thousands of both free and paid themes and plugins available.
To find themes, you can search the WordPress theme directory or buy a theme from a third-party site like ThemeForest.
To find plugins, you can search the WordPress plugin directory or buy them from a third-party site like Creative Market.
When choosing a theme or plugin, make sure that it’s compatible with the latest version of WordPress and that it has good reviews.
Installing a theme or plugin is very easy.
You can do it from the WordPress admin panel by going to Appearance > Themes or Plugins > Add New.
Then, you can either upload the theme/plugin file from your computer or install it directly from the WordPress directory.
Once it’s installed, you can activate it and start using it right away.
I use Kadence for my sites, which is free and super simple to set up!
What is a WordPress theme?
A WordPress theme is a pre-designed template that you can install on your blog to change its appearance.
There are thousands of both free and paid themes available.
To find themes, you can search the WordPress theme directory or buy a theme from a third-party site like Creative Market.
What are the best free WordPress themes?
There are many free themes that come with WordPress.
The best one is the one that I use on this site, She Knows SEO. The theme is called Kadence.
They have a paid option as well, but it’s unnecessary.
Stick with the free version and the free starter templates. You’ll have a pretty site, but it won’t slow down your loading times.
Bonus: it’s very user-friendly!
Do I need a paid blog theme?
No, you don’t need a paid theme.
There are many free themes that come with WordPress and there are also many third-party themes that are either free or very affordable.
I recommend sticking with the free versions unless you have a specific reason for wanting a paid theme.
When I’ve paid for themes in the past, they were pretty but they massively slowed down my site. Many had terrible support networks and weren’t intuitive to use.
What are blog plugins?
Plugins are small pieces of software that add additional functionality to your blog.
There are thousands of both free and paid plugins available.
To find plugins, you can search the WordPress plugin directory.
You’ll need plugins to help customize your site without code.
And avoid these plugins at all cost!
What blog plugins should I have?
Here are some essential plugins that I recommend:
– Rank Math: This plugin helps you optimize your blog posts for the search engines.
– Short Pixel: This plugin helps you optimize your images for faster loading times.
– WP Rocket: This plugin helps you speed up your website by caching your pages and images.
– Pretty Links: This plugin helps you cloak your affiliate links and make them prettier.
These are just a few essential plugins that I recommend.
Growing a Blog FAQs
What are the best ways to promote a blog post?
There are many ways to promote a blog post.
The best way is to share it on social media, specifically on sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
Another great way to promote your blog post is to email your list and let them know about it.
You can also promote your blog post by guest posting on other blogs in your niche.
SEO is the best way to promote your blog organically.
By optimizing for Google with the use of keywords, you can be found in searches with thousands of people asking questions monthly.
How do I get pageviews?
There’s no one answer to this question since there are a multitude of ways to generate pageviews.
Some popular methods include writing great content, optimizing your website for search engines, and promoting your content through social media and email marketing.
I prefer organic pageviews via SEO and Google searches.
Some other bloggers prefer click-throughs from social media, but it’s a more active strategy.
Experiment with different tactics and see what works best for you and your blog.
Scale your pageviews with this keyword strategy!
How can I check my blog traffic for free?
There are many free traffic analysis tools available, such as Google Analytics.
I recommend using Google Analytics since it’s the most popular and it’s what I use on this site.
It’s easy to set up and it gives you a lot of data about your website traffic.
It’ll give you real-time information on how many people are visiting your site at the moment and over time.
You don’t need to check this daily but it’s a good way to check your blog’s growth.
How long should blog posts be?
This is a difficult question to answer since it depends on your niche and what you’re writing about.
Generally, I recommend aiming for at least 600 words per post.
This may seem like a lot, but Google loves long-form content and so do readers.
Longer posts give you more opportunity to rank in the search engines and they also give you more opportunity to build trust with your readers.
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. I wrote a whole post on the ideal blog length for SEO that you can read here.
How often should I post on my blog?
A lot of people say that a posting schedule is vital.
Honestly, it’s not.
It’s more about posting as much quality content as you can. Having more SEO-optimized blog posts will help you grow faster.
A good rule of thumb is 1 blog post per week – but only if you can commit to these being well written.
Some people publish daily, but you don’t have to if you’ll sacrifice quality.
Remember, you need a lot of posts. On average, people have 120-150 posts to get into Mediavine.
If you publish 1 post a month, it’ll take you ten years to get to that!
How do I come up with content ideas for blog posts?
There are many ways to come up with content ideas for blog posts.
Lots of people just write what they want.
Successful bloggers write about what their audience need.
The best way to come up with these ideas is via SEO, specifically competitor analysis and creating content silos.
I teach these strategies in my Profitable Part-Time Blogger program. You’ll be able to plan a years worth of content (and more!) in a day.
What is a collab post?
A collab post is a blog post that a host blogger will publish on their site.
Other bloggers contribute a section, usually around 300 words, in exchange for a do-follow backlink to grow your DA and gain link juice to blog posts.
Collab posts are a great way to get exposure to new audiences and build relationships with other bloggers in your niche.
What are backlinks?
Backlinks are links from other websites to your website.
They are important for SEO because they act as a vote of confidence from other websites.
The more backlinks you have, the higher you will rank in Google.
It’s like having a friend recommend your site to Google. Google trusts that friend, so they perceive you as being more of an authority.
How do I get backlinks?
The best way to get backlinks is to create high-quality content that other people want to link to.
If you have a travel blog, writing high-quality content that tourism boards can link to or statistics that people can cite works great. These are the types of posts that tend to get a lot of links.
Guest posts and collab posts are another way to gain these.
If you struggle with guest post outreach, then you need my Guest Post Outreach Kit – complete with everything you need to pitch DA 60+ sites to get high-quality backlinks.
What is a no-follow vs. a do-follow link?
A no-follow link is a link that does not pass on link juice or authority.
A do-follow link is a link that does pass on link juice and authority.
All links are technically do-follow until they have a rel=”nofollow” tag added to them.
WordPress lets you do this by clicking on the slider that says “no follow” when you add links.
How do I stop spam comments on my blog posts?
The best way to stop spam comments on your blog posts is by using a plugin like Akismet.
Akismet is a plugin that comes installed with WordPress. It will automatically filter out spam comments for you.
You can also moderate all comments before they are published on your blog post.
Honestly, you don’t need comments turned on. Just ask your audience to email you instead or join your group.
I haven’t updated my blog in a while, can I restart it?
Yes, you can restart your blog even if you haven’t updated it in a while.
The best way to do this is by writing new posts as though nothing has happened.
If you really want to let people know you’re back, you can email your list to let them know you’re back.
My traffic isn’t growing, what am I doing wrong?
There are a few things you could be doing wrong if your traffic isn’t growing.
The most common reason is that people give up too soon. It takes a lot of hard work and consistency to grow a blog.
Another reason is that you aren’t treating your blog like a business. You aren’t promoting it. You aren’t writing SEO-optimized content.
If you think you’re doing everything right, you may need a new growth strategy.
People keep emailing me about backlinks, guest posts, and SEO/web optimization on my site. What do I do?
Block them!
These are spam.
Outreach companies try to take advantage of bloggers by paying for backlinks or guest posts with do-follow links, which is against Google’s policies.
People will also reach out to tell you stuff is wrong with your site and that they can fix it.
These are cold emails just looking for clients. They haven’t actually checked your site.
I still receive them and I’m an SEO specialist with a perfect score on page speed tests.
Blog Marketing FAQs
What social media platforms do I need for my blog?
It’s up to you!
I know bloggers with none.
Pinterest is the best one to get started on.
Otherwise, you can use Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, and Facebook.
Try to start small with a single one rather than over-committing to them all.
Make accounts so you save the name, but don’t worry about posting immediately.
Do I need an email list for my blog?
Yes!
An email list allows you to build a relationship with your readers. You can send them exclusive content, ask for feedback, and let them know about new posts.
Email lists are also great for promoting your blog content and growing your traffic.
Emails are the best way to make affiliate income and to sell products.
These are primed audience members who trust you. So they’re more willing to buy from you.
SEO Blogging FAQs
What is the best way to get free website traffic?
SEO!
Organic traffic from Google is the best way to get free website traffic.
You can optimize your website and blog posts for certain keywords that people are searching for.
When you rank higher on Google, ChatGPT Search, Bing, etc., you’ll get more traffic to your website.
What is SEO?
SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization.
It’s the process of optimizing your website and blog posts to rank higher on Google search.
Essentially it’s like translating your site for Google.
Google speaks English like we do, but it has a specific dialect. We need to translate our sites for Google to understand.
This can be done by using certain keywords, linking to other websites, and having a fast website.
Why isn’t my blog on Google?
If your blog isn’t on Google, it’s because you haven’t optimized it for SEO.
Remember, we need to translate our site for Google.
You may not have submitted a sitemap to Google to be indexed (you can do this via the free Rank Math plugin).
You may also have your blog set to private. Ensure it’s public!
What is User Intent and Why is It Important?
User intent is what someone is looking to do when they search for something on Google.
It’s important because it helps you understand what people are actually looking for when they search for certain keywords.
This way, you can create content that actually answers their questions and meets their needs.
For example, if someone is searching “best restaurants in New Zealand”, they don’t want New Zealand recipes. They want tips on where to eat.
So if you don’t write about restaurants, you won’t rank.
Google can tell that you’re not answering the right questions.
How Can I Improve My Site’s SEO?
There are a number of ways to improve your site’s SEO:
1. Use keyword research to find the right keywords to target.
2. Optimize your website for those keywords.
3. Write great content that answers people’s questions.
4. Build backlinks to your website from other high-quality websites.
5. Create an intentional internal linking strategy.
6. Ensure your website is fast and mobile-friendly.
7. Use an SEO plugin like Rank Math to help you with the technical aspects of SEO.
8. Regularly audit your website to ensure everything is up-to-date.
9. Always be learning and keeping up-to-date.
Pageviews vs. sessions: what’s the difference?
Pageviews are the number of times a page on your website has been viewed.
Sessions are the number of times someone has visited your website.
A session can include multiple pageviews.
For example, if someone visits your home page and then clicks to read one of your blog posts, that would count as two pageviews but only one session.
How can I check my site speed?
There are a number of ways to check your site speed:
1. Google PageSpeed Insights – This is a free tool provided by Google that will give you a detailed report on how to improve your site speed.
2. GTmetrix – This is another free tool that will provide you with a detailed report on how to improve your site speed.
3. WebPageTest – This is a free tool that will give you a detailed report on how to improve your site speed. I love the waterfall feature to see what is loading in succession.
How can I speed up my site?
There are a number of ways to speed up your site:
1. Use a content delivery network (CDN) – A CDN is a network of servers that deliver content to users based on their geographical location. This can help speed up your site because the content is being delivered from a server that is closer to the user.
2. Optimize your images – Large images can slow down your site. Make sure to optimize your images for the web by saving them in the correct file format and sizing them appropriately. I recommend this plugin.
3. Cache your site – Caching your site can help speed it up by storing a static copy of your site so that it doesn’t have to be generated each time a user visits.
4. Use a good hosting provider – A good hosting provider can make a big difference in the speed of your site. Make sure to do your research and choose a reputable provider. I recommend this one.
5. A good theme – A good WordPress theme can help speed up your site. Make sure to choose a theme that is well-coded and doesn’t have a lot of unnecessary features.
What is DA? How do I check it?
DA stands for domain authority. It’s a metric that is used to predict how well a website will rank in Google.
You can check your DA with the MozBar extension for Chrome.
What is long tail keyword? How is it different?
A long-tail keyword is a keyword phrase that is more specific and usually longer than a common, short-tail keyword. They average 4+ words.
For example, “best restaurants in New Zealand” is a long-tail keyword. It’s more specific than just “restaurants” and it’s longer.
Long-tail keywords are often easier to rank for because they are more specific and less competitive.
Writing with SEO sounds hard. Can I just write blog posts for fun?
Yes! You can absolutely write blog posts for fun.
However, if you want to improve your chances of ranking in Google and getting traffic to your website, then you’ll want to consider using SEO best practices.
This includes things like using keyword research to find the right keywords to target, optimizing your website for those keywords, writing great content that is both informative and enjoyable to read, and promoting your content through social media and other channels.
But at the end of the day, you can absolutely write blog posts for fun without worrying about SEO.
You just won’t make money easily.
Blog Monetization FAQs
How do you make money with a blog?
There are a number of ways to make money with a blog:
1. Advertisements – You can place ads on your website and earn money every time someone clicks on an ad.
2. Affiliate marketing – You can promote products or services for other companies and earn a commission on each sale that you generate.
3. Sponsored posts – You can write sponsored posts for companies or brands and earn money for each post.
4. Products and services- You can sell products or services through your website.
5. Consulting – You can offer your consulting services through your website.
6. Coaching – You can offer coaching services through your website.
What is the difference between an affiliate link and a normal link?
An affiliate link is a special type of link that allows you to earn a commission on sales made through your link.
A normal link is just a plain URL that doesn’t have any special tracking or commission attached to it.
What are blog ad networks?
Blog ad networks are companies that connect advertisers with bloggers who want to host ads on their site.
Some popular blog ad networks include Adsense, Mediavine, Raptive, Journey, and SheMedia.
What is sponsored content?
Sponsored content is a type of post that is created by an advertiser and published on a blog.
The post is usually about a product or service that the advertiser offers, and it includes a link back to their website.
Sponsored content is different from traditional advertising because it is more subtle and less intrusive.
Should I join Google AdSense?
Google AdSense is a popular blog ad network, but it’s not the only one out there.
There are many other ad networks that you can join, so you’ll want to do some research to see which one is the best fit for your blog.
You can get started with AdSense but it’s not worth it
The payout is crap and you’ll likely have to wait years to unlock your payment because it has a $100 minimum. I still have $83 from my first two years of blogging locked in the account.
AdSense also massively slows down your blog. It’s better to wait for Ezoic (50k pageviews minimum – they accept you earlier, but they don’t provide support then) so you can rank well.
Which ad network is best?
There is no one “best” ad network. It depends on a variety of factors, including your niche, traffic level, and personal preferences.
Some popular ad networks include Raptive and Mediavine.
Mediavine is known for having the best page speed and customer service. Plus high RPMs so a higher income.
I analyzed all of the top networks for you here.
Now That You’re an Expert, It’s Time to Grow Your Blog!

It can also be a great way to make money by monetizing your blog with things like affiliate marketing, sponsored content, and ad networks.
