37 Advantages and Disadvantages of Blogging
Blogging is one of the most popular online activities.
It’s easy to see why – blogging combines the best of both worlds: the freedom and intimacy of a personal journal with the wide audience and potential influence of a website.
But like anything else, there are advantages and disadvantages to blogging.
I’ve been blogging for 5 years now and have been through it all: the tech breakdowns, the late nights writing posts, and cheering with excitement as my monthly income peaked 5 figures.
So I understand that it’s not all pros – there are some serious cons to running a blog.
Whether you’re an existing blogger who needs to feel less alone in their struggles or a new blogger trying to decide if blogging is right for you, this post will help you out!
I’m sharing the advantages and disadvantages of blogging – and how to succeed as a blogger with SEO.
Profitable Part-Time Blogger
Ready to grow a blogging business that fits your life?
The Profitable Part-Time Blogger Program helps you attract your ideal audience, master SEO, and make $5K/month—all in just 20 hours a week.
Whether it’s a side hustle or your dream job, it’s time to work smarter, not harder. Let’s make your blog work for you!
What is a blog?
A blog is something that people write on the internet. They can share their thoughts, pictures, and videos with other people.
People can also leave comments on blogs. This is a good way to communicate with others.
Blogs can be about anything. Some people blog about their day, some people blog about their thoughts, and some people blog about their hobbies.
Blogging has become very popular in recent years. It is estimated that there are over 20 million blogs on the internet.
This means that there are a lot of people writing about a lot of different things!
Why do people blog?
People blog for many reasons. Some people do it to share their thoughts and feelings with others.
Some people do it to document their lives. Some people do it to make money. And some people do it to promote their businesses.
Whatever the reason, blogging can be a very rewarding experience. It can be a great way to connect with others and to share your thoughts and ideas with the world.
37 Advantages and Disadvantages of Blogging
17 Pros of Blogging:
You’re the Boss!
One of the best things about blogging is that you’re the boss. You get to decide what to write about, when to write, and how often to write.
You can also decide how you want to promote your blog. If you don’t want to share your personal information, you don’t have to.
I love being my own boss. I get to give myself vacation days, sick leave, and even “chocolate days” that involve constant treats while I work.
What job can offer that??
Create a Community
Blogging can be a great way to build a community. If you write about topics that are important to you, chances are there are others who feel the same way.
You can connect with these people and create a community of like-minded individuals. This can be a great way to make friends and find support for your ideas.
Work Remotely
Another great thing about blogging is that you can do it from anywhere in the world.
As long as you have an internet connection, you can blog from anywhere. This is a great way to make money if you travel often or if you just want to work from home.
As a digital nomad, blogging really spoke to me.
It allowed me to work from the beach in Spain, from a ranch in Croatia, and even from my bedroom on a rainy day in Oxford!
I could literally work from anywhere – and there was no fighting about hybrid work with your boss.
Flexibility
Blogging also offers a lot of flexibility in terms of hours and working days.
If you have a 9-5 job, you can blog before work, during your lunch break, or even after work.
If you have kids, you can blog while they’re at school or sleeping. You can pretty much blog whenever you want!
This flexibility is one of the things that I love most about blogging.
I can take a day off whenever I want and make up for it by working a few extra hours the next day.
I can also work from anywhere in the world – as long as there’s an internet connection!
Schedule All the Naps!
If you’re a night owl, you can blog at night. If you’re a morning person, you can blog in the morning.
You can even schedule all your naps and take a break whenever you want! (I’m not joking – this is one of my favorite things about blogging).
No Two Days Are the Same
Another great thing about blogging is that no two days are the same.
Sure, you might have a general idea of what you’ll be doing each day, but there’s always something new to write about, someone new to connect with, or some new challenge to overcome.
This variety keeps things interesting and makes blogging a lot of fun.
Many Ways to Make Money
There are many ways to make money from blogging. You can sell products, run ads, or work with brands as an influencer.
You can also create and sell courses, e-books, or other digital products. The sky is the limit when it comes to making money from your blog!
One of the things I love about blogging is that there are many ways to make money.
I’ve tried a few different methods and I’m always experimenting with new ones.
It’s great to have so many options and to be able to adjust my strategies as needed.
Low Cost to Start
Compared to other businesses, it is very low cost to start a blog.
All you need is a domain name and hosting (which can be as little as $5/month) and you’re ready to go!
Of course, you can spend more if you want to, but it’s not necessary to get started.
Don’t Need to Code or Know Tech
When I started my first blog, I had no idea how to code.
Fortunately, you don’t need to know how to code or be tech-savvy to start a blog.
There are many platforms (like WordPress) that make it easy to create and design your blog without any prior experience.
Endless Things to Write About
One of the best things about blogging is that there are endless things to write about.
If you get stuck, you can always find new topics to write about by doing a quick Google search or looking at popular blog posts in your niche.
You can also read books, magazines, and news articles for inspiration.
SEO is the best way to come up with blog post ideas. I’ve even used it to come up with over 140 blog post ideas for travel bloggers in this post!
Establish Yourself as an Expert
Blogging is a great way to establish yourself as an expert in your field.
By writing informative and helpful blog posts, you can position yourself as an authority figure that people can trust.
This can be helpful if you’re looking to land speaking gigs, consulting work, or other opportunities.
Running a blog helped me establish my SEO business and sell my services to clients.
Earn Passive Income
Unlike most jobs, blogging can earn you passive income.
This means that you can make money even when you’re not actively working on your blog.
Of course, the amount of passive income you earn will depend on the strategies you use and the amount of work you put in upfront, but it is possible to make a significant amount of money from your blog.
I currently earn over $10,000/month in passive income from my blogs and services I sell through my blog.
Creative Outlet (that Pays for Your Lattes!)
If you’re looking for a creative outlet, blogging is a great option.
You can express yourself in whatever way you want and there’s no limit to what you can create.
And, if you’re lucky, your blog can even pay for your lattes! (I’m not kidding – I’ve used my blog earnings to buy a LOT of coffee!)
One of my favorite things about blogging is that it’s a creative outlet that actually pays me.
Be Passionate About Your Work
When you’re passionate about your work, it doesn’t feel like work at all.
This is one of the best things about blogging – you can be passionate about your topic and share that passion with others.
When you’re passionate about what you do, it shows in your writing and people will take notice.
Enhances SEO Value of a Website
Blogging also enhances the SEO value of a website.
This is because blog posts are full of keyword-rich content that search engines love.
When you include relevant keywords in your blog posts, you’re more likely to rank higher in search engine results, which can lead to more traffic to your website.
I’ve used my blog to drive tons of traffic to my website and grow my business.
Really Help People
When you write helpful and informative blog posts, you can really help people.
Whether you’re sharing your expertise on a topic, sharing a personal story, or just writing about something you’re passionate about, your blog posts can make a difference in people’s lives.
I’ve received countless emails from readers thanking me for helping them with a problem or inspiring them to pursue their dreams.
And that is one of the best things about blogging – knowing that you’re really making a difference in people’s lives.

Pay for Your Travels
If you’re looking to travel more, blogging can help you pay for your travels.
There are a number of ways to do this, such as writing sponsored posts, selling digital products, or setting up affiliate marketing relationships with travel-related companies.
I’ve used all of these methods to earn money from my travel blog and pay for my travels around the world.
20 Cons of Blogging:
You Have to Motivate and Organize Yourself
Unlike a traditional job, blogging requires a lot of motivation and organization.
You have to be self-disciplined to sit down and write quality blog posts on a regular basis.
This can be a challenge for some people.
You’ll have SO much content to keep track of. It’s so important to be organized.
A Lot of Gatekeeping
There’s a lot of gatekeeping in the blogging world.
This means that there are a lot of people who will try to tell you what you can and can’t do, what you should and shouldn’t write about, and how you should run your blog.
While some of this advice can be helpful, a lot of it is just noise that can clutter your mind and make it difficult to focus on what’s important – writing great content.
Don’t just buy into what people are saying. Ensure they have the results and social proof to back it up!
Can’t Write What You Want
Ok, so technically writing about whatever you want isn’t true.
You will need to write about keywords to rank for SEO. That can mean writing things that bore you to tears – like the cost of living posts I had to write for Nina Out and About.
They rank very well and bring me tons of traffic, but honestly it was like pulling teeth to write them!
Takes 6+ Months to Earn Money (Often Years!)
One of the biggest cons of blogging is that it can take a long time to start earning any money from your blog.
I’ve been blogging for over five years and I’m only now starting to earn a full-time income from my blog.
It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and patience to make money blogging.
You’ll need to transition to thinking of your blog as a business and invest in it to really see an income.
You Need to Invest to Make a Profit
While you can start a blog for free, if you want to make any money from your blog, you’re going to need to invest some money.
To really be successful at blogging, you’ll need to pay for things like a self-hosted WordPress site, a professional email list service, and high-quality images.
You’ll also need to invest in courses.
I scaled my blog to $10k months once I started investing in expertise from successful bloggers.

It Can Get Lonely
Blogging can be a very lonely profession.
You’re often working by yourself, in your own home, without any co-workers to interact with.
This can be a challenge for some people who thrive on social interaction.
One way to combat this is to join a blogging community or online course where you can interact with other bloggers – like in my Profitable Part-Time Blogger program.
Internet Trolls Suck
If you put yourself out there, chances are you’re going to attract some internet trolls.
These are people who just love to leave hateful comments on blogs and social media.
It’s best to just ignore them, but sometimes they can be hard to ignore.
Remember, you can block people.
But also, it’s kind of a sign that you made it, right? These people have been able to find you and feel like they can gain some social clout to get some amount of clout.
Your Family Won’t Understand Your Job
Since blogging is such a new profession, your family and friends probably won’t understand what you do or how you make money.
They’ll often think you’re just sitting at home in your PJs all day, which can be frustrating.
You can combat this by educating them on what blogging really is and how it works.
But it’s best to find some blogging friends to have some people who understand your work.
Nothing makes me feel better than sharing my wins with my blogging mastermind groups every week!
You Need to Be Adaptable and Learn New Things
The blogging world is constantly changing.
What works today might not work tomorrow.
This means you need to be adaptable and always be willing to learn new things.
Platforms and Trends Can Fizzle Out
Just like any other business, blogging has its share of risks.
A platform or trend you’re relying on could fizzle out and leave you high and dry.
For example, when Clubhouse first came out, a lot of bloggers were using it to build their audiences.
But then it suddenly fizzled out and most people stopped using it.
This is why it’s important to have a diversified platform strategy and not put all your eggs in one basket.
SEO is a pretty safe bet, as Google hasn’t massively changed their program since it began. However, the only thing you truly own is your email list!
People Skim Read Posts That Take Days to Write
It can be disheartening to spend days writing a post, only to have people skim it and not read it fully.
But this is just the reality of blogging.
People are busy and they don’t have time to read every word of your post.
You’ll Face Imposter Syndrome
If you’re new to blogging, chances are you’ll face imposter syndrome at some point.
This is when you doubt your abilities and feel like you’re not good enough.
It’s normal to feel this way, but don’t let it stop you from continuing to blog.
The key is to just keep going and push through it!
Can Have No ROI
If you’re not careful, blogging can have no ROI.
This is because it’s easy to spend money on things like a self-hosted WordPress site, courses, and other resources without making any money back.
To avoid this, be strategic about the investments you make and only spend money on things that will help you make money.
It’s More Difficult Than it Looks
Blogging looks easy from the outside, but it’s actually quite difficult.
It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and persistence to be successful.
But if you’re up for the challenge, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience!
Competing with People Who Have Blogged For Years
When you’re first starting out, it can be discouraging to see people who have been blogging for years.
They seem to have it all figured out and you feel like you’ll never catch up.
But don’t worry, everyone starts at the beginning.
Just focus on creating the best content you can and the rest will come in time!
Feeds Your Internet Addiction
If you’re someone who is addicted to the internet, chances are blogging will only make it worse.
You’ll be spending even more time online and it can be hard to disconnect.
Make sure you set some boundaries for yourself so you don’t get too lost in the blog world!
Hard to Turn Off Your Work Brain
When you work from home, it can be hard to turn off your work brain.
You might find yourself working late into the night or on weekends because you don’t have a set schedule.
This can be tough, but it’s important to take breaks and disconnect from work when you can.
Myriads of Tech Glitches
There are always going to be tech glitches when you’re blogging.
Your site might go down, your images might not load, or you might lose all your content.
It’s frustrating, but it comes with the territory.
Always keep back ups of your site and hire an experienced developer when you need tech work done!
Fake Gurus Around Every Corner
There are so many fake gurus in the blogging world.
These are people who claim to be experts and sell you on their courses and products.
But in reality, they have no idea what they’re talking about.
Do your research before you invest in anything!
So Many Passwords to Remember
If you’re someone who has trouble remembering passwords, blogging is going to be a challenge.
You’ll need to create passwords for your site, email, social media accounts, and more.
There are password managers that can help, but it’s still a lot to keep track of!
Ways to Improve Your Blog
- Invest in your blog: A lot of people think that blogging is free, but if you want to be successful, you need to invest in your blog. This means buying a domain name, hiring a designer, and investing in other resources like courses.
- Implement an SEO strategy: Search engine optimization is essential if you want people to find your blog. You need to do keyword research, optimize your site, and create backlinks.
- Outsource what your hate: Blogging is a lot of work and it’s impossible to do everything on your own. If there are certain tasks that you hate or don’t have time for, outsource them to someone else. This will free up your time so you can focus on other aspects of your blog.
- Invest your time: In order for your blog to be successful, you need to invest your time. This means writing quality content, promoting your blog, and engaging with your audience.
- Be patient: Blogging takes time and you won’t see overnight success. Be patient and focus on creating the best content you can. Over time, you will start to see results!
- Niche down: It’s tempting to try to appeal to everyone, but it’s much better to niche down and focus on a specific audience. When you target a specific group of people, you will be able to better serve them and you will be more likely to succeed.
