Are SEO Keywords Case Sensitive?
An SEO keyword strategy is essential for any blogger. But there are SO many things to worry about – from how often to use the keyword, to where to put the keyword, to finding the right keywords.
But there’s something else to consider: are SEO keywords case sensitive?
Or, rephrased, do we need to capitalize our keywords to match the exact search?
The short answer: nope!
SEO keywords are NOT case sensitive – mainly because most search engines aren’t case sensitive.
I’ll break down why SEO keywords aren’t case sensitive, when you need to worry about capitals in your SEO optimization, and why Google doesn’t care about capitalization.

What are the SEO keywords?
SEO keywords are the words or phrases that you want to rank for in search engines.
For example, let’s say you have a blog about plant-based recipes.
Some of the SEO keywords you might want to target are “vegan recipes”, “plant-based recipes”, and “easy vegan recipes”.
These are the terms that you want to show up for when people are searching for recipes – and by optimizing your blog posts around these keywords, you can improve your chances of ranking in search engines.
To rank for these, you can’t just add the word once.
You’ve gotta work for those rankings!
It’s important to note that you shouldn’t stuff your blog post with keywords – this will actually hurt your chances of ranking.
Instead, focus on using the keyword naturally throughout the post, as well as in the title, meta description, and other places where it makes sense.

Now that I’ve covered what SEO keywords are and why they’re important, let’s move on to answering the question that brought you here.

What does it mean if something is case-sensitive?
If something is case sensitive, that means that the meaning of the word or phrase changes depending on whether it’s capitalized or not.
For example, do you need to capitalize words appropriately to fit grammar rules.
Additionally, case sensitivity can transform the meaning of a word.
For example, the word “polish” can mean either to make something shine, or the nationality.
These are two different meanings for the same word, depending on whether it’s capitalized or not.
In the context of SEO keywords, case sensitivity would mean that you need to match the keyword exactly – including any capitals.
So if someone searches for “vegan Recipes” with a capital R, you wouldn’t show up in the results unless your post was also titled “vegan Recipes”.
…except that’s not the case with SEO keywords.
What is the difference between case sensitive and case insensitive?
To be case insensitive means that the word or phrase can be in any case, and it will still be recognized.
For example, let’s say you’re looking for the word “polish” in a document. If the document is case insensitive, then searching for “polish”, “Polish”, or “pOLiSh” would all bring up the same results. The search wouldn’t care about whether the word was upper case, lower case, or a mix of both – it would just recognize that it’s the same word. In contrast, if the document was case sensitive, then searching for “polish” and “Polish” would bring up different results.
So how does this all relate to SEO keywords?
Are keywords case sensitive?
The answer is no – SEO keywords are not case sensitive.
This means that you don’t need to worry about capitalizing your keywords to match the search exactly.
For example, if someone searches for “vegan Recipes”, your post titled “Vegan recipes” would still show up in the results.
The search wouldn’t care that the R is capitalized in one and not the other – it would just recognize that they’re the same word.
The same goes for all other letters in the keyword.
So whether you use upper case, lower case, or a mix of both, you’ll still be able to rank for your SEO keywords.
The Exception
I’ve RARELY found it to be the case that capitalization matters for a keyword.
But there are some times that you need to press that shift button.
When?
Typically this only happens if you’re targetting a short keyword (like “Polish”) in the above example.
If you did search “POLISH”, Google would be like … what are you asking me?
When I did the search, it brought up Polish (the nationality) and no like nail polishes or floor polishes.
So if you were writing a post on polish for hardwood, you would want to ensure you have the right capitalization or you could be seen as totally out of your depth for trying to rank for a keyword about a nationality when you’re talking about making floors shiny.
Like I said, it’s not common, and for bloggers especially who are targeting long tail keyword, we don’t really have to worry about this.
But it’s good to be aware of when people try to claim that you NEVER need to worry about case sensitivity for SEO keywords.
Are search engines case sensitive?
Since we’ve established that SEO keywords are not case sensitive, that means that search engines are also not case sensitive for the most part.
This is good news for bloggers who are worried about using the right case for their keywords.
It also means that you don’t need to worry about optimizing your website or blog for different cases of keywords.
Think about how much time it would take to write two separate articles (because we don’t want to be flagged for plagiarism!) to target “skiing in whistler” and “skiing in Whistler”.
One pesky capital letter could mean literal HOURS of extra work.
Google especially isn’t case sensitive because it knows that its users are in a rush.
When was the last time you used proper grammar or capitals when searching on Google?
Sometimes I forget to even spell half of Toronto correctly, and yet Google still finds me the information I need!
The only exception, like I said above, is when it’s a 1 word search where the intention drastically changes with case. Then it is case sensitive.
But add a second word like “nail polish” or “polish food”, and Google will suddenly not give a damn about your unused shift button or your cat walking across your keyboard and adding random capitals.
Is Google Adwords case sensitive?
Just like SEO keywords are not case sensitive, Google Adwords are also not case sensitive.
This is good news for those of us who are running ads, because it means we don’t need to worry about which case to use for our keywords.
We can mix and match upper case and lower case letters however we want, and not need to run ads for the different keywords (i.e. running two separate ads for “whistler” and “Whistler”).
Should meta descriptions be capitalised?
I say YES, but not because of keywords.
The SEO keyword itself doesn’t need to be capitalized, unless it makes linguistic/grammatic sense (i.e. it’s a location or at the start of a sentence).
Google pulls the meta description you give it (most of the time….) exactly as it is. So you want to capitalize sentences appropriately so that it reads like a proper little paragraph.
But you do not need to adjust the capitalization of your SEO keyword to target case sensitivity.
URLs and Capitalization
URLs and domain names are case insenstive.
This means that sheknowsseo.co and SheKnowsSEO.co lead to the same site.
The same is true for an article on a site: sheknowsseo.co/post-name is the same links as SheKnowsSEO.co/Post-Name.
This is because URLs are case insensitive.
Otherwise we’d have to buy extra domain names for every single variation of capital letters, and make many extra posts.
This saves SO much time.
By default, most people type domains and URLs as lower case, but Google understands what you mean if you capitalize something by accident or on purpose.

The Verdict: Are SEO Keywords Case Sensitive?
For the most part, no.
You don’t need to worry about are SEO keywords case sensitive when you’re blogging or running ads.
The only time you need to be concerned about case sensitivity is for one-word searches where the meaning of the word changes with different cases (i.e. “polish” vs “Polish”).
Other than that, have fun with your keywords and don’t worry about case!
