Mediavine Requirements in 2024 (And How to Reach Them)

Mediavine is the best ad network for bloggers. They work with big-name brands and have the highest paying ad rates in the industry.

If you’ve been blogging for more than a minute, you’ll have heard of Mediavine many times before.

In order to be approved by Mediavine, your blog will need to reach certain requirements.

The main one is a traffic requirement of 50,000 monthly sessions.

Let’s discuss the other requirements to join Mediavine, and how to reach their minimum traffic metric.

What is Mediavine?

Mediavine is an advertising management and monetization company.

They work with over 8,600 bloggers and website owners, helping them make money from their content.

Mediavine has some of the highest paying ad rates in the industry, which is why so many bloggers want to join their network.

Joining Mediavine is also a status symbol in the blogging world.

It’s seen as a sign that your blog is successful and well-trafficked.

Since Mediavine is built by bloggers for bloggers, it also has some of the best user experience functions around.

My favorite thing about them is that they don’t slow down your site.

I’ve been with a number of other ad networks in the past (Ezoic, Monumetric, Google Adsense, SheMedia), and found that they all had an impact on my site speed.

Mediavine, on the other hand, prioritizes lightweight code so you don’t lose your rankings, and therefore lose income from your ads.

Mediavine Requirements

In order to be approved by Mediavine, your blog will need to reach certain requirements.

Let’s go through them step by step:

1. Website Quality

First and foremost, your blog needs to be high quality.

This means that your site should have a professional design, well-written content, and high-quality images.

The main priority here is content. You need to have high-quality content to engage readers and for ad networks to want to work with you.

If you’re not sure whether or not your site meets this criterion, Mediavine has a team of reviewers who will take a look at your site and let you know if it’s up to par.

2. Long-Form, Original Content

Your content also needs to be long-form and original.

This means that your posts should be at least 1,000 words, and you shouldn’t be copying anyone else’s content.

The longer your content is, the more engaged readers will be, and the more likely they are to see ads.

It also ensures that you aren’t posting 200 spammy or low-quality posts.

Additionally, Google prefers longer content, so this requirement will help your SEO as well.

3. Organic, Clean Traffic

Your traffic needs to be organic and clean.

This means that you shouldn’t be using any black hat SEO tactics, and your traffic should primarily come from search engines like Google.

So you don’t want any traffic from bots, any paid traffic for spammy sites, or any bought link backs.

Additionally, Mediavine wants to ensure that you have sustainable content, so they prioritize organic search traffic.

You can have some traffic from social networks like Facebook or Instagram, but they primarily want to see traffic from search engines like Google and Pinterest (yep, Pinterest is a search engine; not social media!).

4. Good Adsense Standing

Mediavine also requires that you have a good standing with Google Adsense.

This means that your account should not have been flagged or suspended ever.

If you have had issues with Google Adsense, you’ll have an opportunity to explain it. But usually, an issue with Adsense means that your site is spammy or not fit for ad partners.

5. US First

Mediavine is a US-first ad network, so they require that at least 50% of your traffic come from the United States.

This is why I advise all of my SEO clients to search for keywords in US Google via a VPN or on US Keysearch settings.

You want as much US traffic as possible to ensure you can get in to Mediavine.

While there is nothing wrong with traffic from other countries, you’ll be forced to select another ad network.

6. Content Requirements

Mediavine also requires your blog content/niche to be in certain fields.

For example, they don’t accept any R-rated websites or websites about alcohol/gambling.

Think about it from the perspective of an ad agent. Would they want their product displayed on that type of site?

Probably not.

That’s why Mediavine prefers lifestyle, food, tech, and travel niches that stay away from these types of topics.

If your site talks about sexual vacation packages or primarily is about gambling abroad, then it’s not going to be right for Mediavine and you’ll get declined.

7. Mediavine Traffic Requirements for 1st Site

Lastly, your site must reach 50,000 sessions per month to apply.

If you don’t know what a session is, it’s basically when someone visits your website.

They could look at one page or 100 pages, but as long as they visit your site, it counts as one session.

And if you have 50,000 sessions in a month, you’ll need to have at least 25,000 of those sessions coming from the United States.

This is doable for most people who are blogging consistently and promoting their content.

8. Minimum Traffic Requirements for 2nd Site

Mediavine used to have an option to get second and third sites into their ad network from a lower session count, but they’ve done away with that.

They primarily got rid of this because they found content creators were abusing it and not creating as high-quality content for these additional sites.

So to maintain their high-level of quality so they can request the highest rates from ad agents, they removed this option.

Now, you need 50,000 sessions monthly to get into Mediavine from any of your sites.

Applying with G4

Google is moving away from Universal Analytics to G4 in 2023.

Ad networks like Mediavine are now accepting admissions with G4. The requirements are still the same: 50k sessions in 30 days.

Why Did Mediavine Increase Their Traffic Requirements in 2020?

Mediavine increased their traffic requirements in September of 2020 from 25,000 sessions to 50,000 sessions.

This was a huge change and impacted a lot of bloggers who were growing their traffic to get on their network.

They did this during the pandemic as they saw a huge influx of people blogging from home during this period.

It made sense, so many of us had nothing else to do that we turned our efforts to churning out more content and saw huge traffic spikes (I even had a post about moving to Canada go viral during the US elections!).

With this influx of new bloggers, they decided to up their minimum traffic requirements to maintain their quality assurance.

They didn’t want to let in more people for the sake of it. They wanted to ensure that the websites on their network are of the highest caliber.

So while it may have stung for those of us, like me, who saw 25,000 sessions as a MASSIVE hurdle, they upped their requirements to 50,000 and have stuck with it.

However, reaching 50k monthly sessions is way more doable than most believe.

Let’s looked at some tips to grow your traffic so you can apply to Mediavine.

I Don’t Have Enough Traffic, What Should I Do?

Focus on SEO

If you want to rank in Google, you need to focus on SEO.

It’s the best way to get traffic to your site as it’s free and once you rank for a keyword, you can get traffic from that keyword indefinitely.

Update Old Blog Posts

Updating your old blog posts is an easy way to get more traffic to your site.

You can find your rankings on Google Search Console to see how your posts are performing for different keywords. It’s also a great way to find hidden keywords you didn’t know you were ranking for, so you can optimize for them.

Then update your posts with new information, fresh images, and even add a video!

This will help you rank higher in Google as they prefer fresh content.

It will also help you get more social shares as people will see that your post is new and relevant.

Finally, it will help you increase your pageviews as people will stay on your site longer if they’re engaged with your content.

Grow Your DA

DA stands for Domain Authority and it’s a metric used by Moz to determine how well your site will rank in Google.

The higher your DA, the more likely you are to rank in Google.

Grow Your Email List

Your email list is one of the most valuable assets you have as a blogger.

You own your list and you can use it to drive traffic to your site on demand.

The best way to grow your email list is by using pop-ups and lead magnets.

Lead magnets are freebies that you offer in exchange for someone’s email.

You can share your content with your list to increase your sessions. You can even sell to them to increase your revenue before you hit Mediavine’s traffic requirements!

Grow Your Pinterest Following

Pinterest is a great source of traffic for bloggers.

You can use it to drive traffic to your site on demand by creating pins and sharing them in your boards and on group boards.

The best way to grow your Pinterest following is by using relevant keywords in your bio, pin descriptions, and board descriptions.

Since Pinterest is a search engine, any traffic you have from it will contribute to your Mediavine sessions.

Join an Alternative Ad Network

If you can’t wait to get into Mediavine, you can join an alternative ad network.

Adthrive is a popular one that works with many bloggers.

It has similar traffic requirements to Mediavine (100k pageviews) but it’s a great way to start earning from your blog sooner if your pageviews are higher than your sessions.

Another option is Ezoic.

I know a lot of bloggers love or hate Ezoic. I’m in the less happy side, as I found it really slowed my site and the support wasn’t very helpful.

However, they’re MUCH better than Google Adsense.

I recommend skipping Google Adsense rather than earning the pennies it’ll pay out.

You don’t get paid until you hit $100. I still have $83 locked in there from my early days of blogging that they refuse to pay me.

SheMedia is my favourite platform with a lower threshold than Mediavine. You need 25k monthly pageviews to enroll, but you’ll be locked in for at least a year.

I did find their ads slowed my site, but no where near as much as Ezoic or Adsense.

However, it pays much less than Mediavine.

How to Apply to Mediavine

Now that you know all about Mediavine, it’s time to apply!

You can apply here.

You’ll need to enter your site URL, email address, and name. They’ll also need access to your Google Analytics to prove your monthly sessions.

They’ll then review your site to see if it meets their requirements.

If it does, you’ll be accepted into the program and you can start earning from your blog!

How Much Does Mediavine Pay?

Mediavine pays based on RPM, which stands for revenue per thousand impressions.

This means that you’ll earn a certain amount of money for every 1,000 times an ad is shown on your site.

The average RPM for Mediavine is $12-30.

I know bloggers who make $5,000 per month with 150k monthly sessions. And others who make a third of that with the same traffic.

Your RPM will depend on your niche, your site speed and layout, and the average time visitors spend on your site.

For example, you’ll make more if visitors stay long enough to watch a full video than if people click off your page within 6 seconds.

Most bloggers say that you can expect to make at least $1,500 with 50k sessions.

Yes, you can leave after enrolling. However, they require 30 days notice.
