What is Lyrical Host?

Lyrical Host is a UK-based blog host.

Unlike other blog hosts, they’re not owned by a big web hosting chain. In fact, they’re considered an indie or small business web host.

Jenni Brown, a blogger, started the company when she noticed that the big names in blog hosting weren’t really offering the best products.

Why do you need a blog host?

If you don’t already know, a blog host is a platform that stores your website files and connects them to the internet so people can see your site when they type in your URL.

When you own the domain name for a site, nothing loads without a host. It’s kind of like buying a lot to put a house on. Without it, you can build a house but it won’t be anchored anywhere for people to find.

You have to build your house (your site) on the lot (hosting) for people to be able to find it.

A good host will keep your site fast, secure, and available at all times.

1. Site Speed

The #1 reason I switched to Lyrical Host was the site speed. I’d heard reviews from other bloggers that had switched and said it MASSIVELY improved their site speed.

At first I thought it was too good to be true.

But then I made the switch, and BAM my site speed improved by 2+ seconds on initial loading.

That may not sound like a lot at first, but with a site loading in about 6-7 seconds, that’s a MASSIVE change.

Whenever I email, I get a response within 1 hour max – even on holidays like Christmas!

They’ve helped me migrate sites, switch themes, undo massive coding errors that broke my site, and even helped with simple image uploads that I messed up.

And they never made me feel stupid, or asked me to pay more for anything to make things work.

In June 2022, my email for this site broke with Bluehost.

I spent about 6 weeks on chat with customer support trying to get it resolved. Essentially, all my emails to @gmail.com addresses bounced back (not great when I had just launched my sales of the SEO Roadmap and people had questions).

Yes, Lyrical Host reviews will say it’s super cheap.

And you may think “but, Nina, Bluehost is only $4 per month. Lyrical Hosting is almost $20 per month. How is that cheap??”

Well, compared to the big names in blog hosting, Lyrical is CHEAP.

Big Scoots starts at $35 per month for 1/4 of the web storage. WPX starts at $21 for 1/5th of the disc space.

So $19.28 USD per month is actually a steal. And that’s only if you pay per month.

To buy it for a year is under $200 – which no other big company is.

And that price remains on renewals every year – so you won’t suddenly see a 3x jump like you will with Bluehost after your first 3 years.

I’ve never been asked to pay more for any features with Lyrical Host.

With Bluehost, when I had 20 emails in my inbox, I was told I needed to upgrade my account to be able to receive more.

When my site has 50 posts, I was told I had used up my disc space and needed to increase my hosting plan.

When I went mini-viral during the US elections and everyone wanted to move to Canada, Bluehost tried to charge me more for the increase in traffic.

(Yes, I’m harping on Bluehost a lot here, but they’re the only other host I’ve used and I had a truly horrifying two years with them).

4. Free Resources and Stock Photos

I had NO idea that Lyrical Host offered this when I signed up.

But when you join Lyrical Host, you get 15 free stock photos EVERY MONTH.

And they’re GORGEOUS.

The theme for them varies each month, so you’re not always getting desks with flat lays. They even have travel months.

On top of that, they have ebook and workbook templates, pinterest pin templates, and other canva graphics you can use to make your site epic.

I’ve been in memberships before that charge $50/month alone for this amount of stuff. But you get it free with any level of hosting plan with Lyrical.

5. Free Blogging Courses

Since Lyrical Host is all about bloggers, they offer free blogging courses to help you make the most of your site.

Some are simple ebooks with tips for affiliate marketing, but others are full out site speed courses that can help you go from 10 second load time to 2 seconds!

They’re the ones that introduced me to my favourite webpagetest.org where I can run a page speed test AND see the exact files that are causing my site to slow down.

I’ve even done their intro SEO course and can vouch for the info they provide.

6. Easy Site Migration and Theme Installs

Changing blog hosts is a literal nightmare.

It’s almost as bad as switching themes.

I did both in the last month and thanks to Lyrical, they were actually painless processes.

She Knows SEO recently left Bluehost for good to join Lyrical Host with my other sites.

I left a message with customer support at 8pm with my log in info, they sent me a link to book my migration slot 30 minutes later, and the next morning at 7 am, my blog was moved.

It took a couple days to finalize the transfer and get all the details loaded – but I did literally nothing during this time.

They sent me updates with progress reports as it went and ensured I had all my files, including my email, moved over.

When I needed to change the theme of my travel site, I used the free staging area included in your web hosting. This meant I could change my theme without breaking my site for my current users as I played with colours and formats.

Viral content isn’t an exact science. It tends to happen out of the blue.

But you want to be prepared for it nonetheless.

When it does happen, getting thousands or hundreds of thousands pageviews in a single day can be a shock to your web host.

Many will actually break – think of sites like Ticketmaster breaking when too many people go on to try to buy Justin Bieber tickets in the early 2010s.

You wouldn’t necessarily consider eco-friendly practices in your blog host.

Annually, Lyrical Host plants 5 trees per hosting plan.

13. Free Cache

One of the ways that Lyrical Hosting is cheaper than other plans is that it includes a free cache plugin.

A cache plug in stores information from your website so that it can be loaded faster the next time someone visits.

Without Lyrical, I typically use WP Rocket for this.

14. Free CDN

On top of a free cache, Lyrical Host also includes a free CDN.

A CDN is a content delivery network.

It stores copies of your site in multiple locations around the world so that it can be loaded faster for visitors in different geographical areas.

You can get this free with Cloudflare, but then you have to manually set it up and ensure it doesn’t conflict with your cache plug in.

15. Lots of Disc Space for Blog + Emails

The Tiny plan of Lyrical Hosting includes 50 GB of SSD web space.

I had no idea what that meant, to be honest.

Essentially it’s a cloud-based storage for your site. So it’s storing about 50 GB of content on your hosted site.

It doesn’t sound like a lot up front, does it?

But it’s actually an EPIC deal.

Bluehost’s base plan includes 10GB. Same goes for Big Scoots and WPX.

So Lyrical is including 10x more room on your site.

And with those other platforms, when you near 5GB, your site starts to slow down.

That doesn’t happen with Lyrical.

For SSD reference, my travel site is 6 years old and has over 220 posts on it, including MANY images. It’s just hit 10GB of SSD space.

When I was on Bluehost with 100 posts, they told me I was at 10GB then. So….

16. Automatic Daily Backups

Included in every Lyrical Hosting plan is automatic daily backups of your site.

They keep these off-site so that if something happens to their servers, your backup will still be intact.

Lyrical Host Review: My Experience

Why did I move from Bluehost to Lyrical Host?

Like most bloggers, I started out on Bluehost because 1) it was widely talked about and 2) it was cheap.

But, like with most things in life, you get what you pay for.
