Steps to Planning Your Business Goals in 2024
Step 1: Select Your 1 Year Goal
Set a SMART goal for the end of 2024. It should have a clear end date, a way to achieve it (without super powers!), and a way to track your achievements.
Goals can be anything, but in this case we’ll use income as an example.
Aim high. It should be slightly uncomfortable to hit your goal and make you work harder.
✅ Good goal = Make $1 million from my business by the end of 2024.
❌ Bad goals = Be rich (what does that mean??), get successful (how are we measuring success?), or make $500 billion in 2 month (not realistic!).
Step 2: Set Monthly Goals
Break down your total goal by month. This will help you set a more achievable metric than your overarching goal.
The goals should grow exponentially, as almost all businesses ebb and flow in income throughout the year.
If you know your business’ high and low times, reflect that in your monthly income goals.
✅ Good = Make $50k in January, $65k in February.
❌ Bad = Make $50k in January if you’ve never made more than $50, Make $10k each month (minimum is ok, but set a higher maximum), Just hope for money with 0 clear goals.
Step 3: Breakdown Income Generators
If your goals are income based, figure out where your income comes from. Write out all your income generators.
If your goals are traffic based, notoriety based, etc. figure out the channels you currently use and their ROI.
Then we figure out how much of our total goal each income stream needs to bring up.
This will vary per business owner and be directly related to your goals. It may even vary by month (for example, I don’t do 1:1 coaching every month. But I know the months when I do it will have higher income).
My Pageview Calculators can help you determine how much a blog post or keyword can make you so you can determine these amounts.
Step 4: Plan Your Monthly Actions
Now that you know where the money is coming from, we need to take action to make it happen.
If your goal is to make $100k off of your course, you need to figure out how to reverse engineer that.
If it’s $1k, then you need 100 people to buy it. So how are you going to do that? What steps will you take that month to achieve that goal.
The same goes for traffic, affiliate/ad income, getting a certain number of speaking gigs or invites for press trips, etc. How much do you need to do to achieve your income goal?
I recommend 4-5 things per month that directly relate to your goal. Or if you have a big plan – like creating your digital course – that will take a whole month, dedicate your month to that pursuit. Then you might only have the one main task with smaller steps.
Step 5: Actually Follow The Plan
A workout plan is great, but if you never follow it nothing will happen.
Same goes for your business!
Hold yourself accountable to achieving your goals in whatever way works best for you.
I keep checklists that I can cross off.
I also give myself a present or some sort of reward for hitting my goals. Every time I check something off, I get a small reward. If I check them all off, I get a bigger reward.
Rewards don’t have to cost anything! It could be a movie night rewatching your favourite movie. Or spending an afternoon in your garden with no one bothering you. Do what works for you!
Find peers who can motivate you. Start a mastermind where you check in with each other once a week or month to see what everyone is doing.
Step 6: Track Your Success
You won’t know if you hit your goal if you aren’t tracking it.
I also find this works for manifestation and encouraging you to do the thing.
I track my income every single day to figure out how much I’m making from all of my revenue streams. It helps me figure out which ones are performing the best – so I should probably spend more time promoting those. And which ones are underperforming – so I should cut them loose or fix them.
I learned about this from Denise DT’s “Get Rich Lucky Bitch” book, and it’s done wonders for me! Every time I track my income, my revenue (and profits) grow!
It also keeps me going. If I’m having a bad day or month where I don’t want to do anything, I can see the impact of that on my income. And money motivates, baby!
Step 7: Reevaluate
Your plan won’t stay the same all year. I had to amend mine multiple times in 2023.
If you watched last year’s workshop, you’ll see my goals were things like selling 2 sites (nope! Didn’t work on them this year), ad income for a 3rd site (tanked it with some of the tests I ran on different ad networks), moving to Europe (fell through the night before), and I thought blogs would be driving my revenue, not my courses.
It’s ok for things to change – and to triage things if they’re not working after a couple months.
The world changes, we change, and stuff doesn’t always work. We don’t want to get to the end of 2024 and we’re still at $0. So be prepared to pivot and check in with your goals.
Also, do they still align with you?
I had plans to re-open coaching again in 2023, but my health has made that a no-go.
I probably won’t quite hit my $500k goal because of it, but I’m ok with that. I’d rather not chase the money and forsake my health.
If you’d asked me that in January I’d have said “f*ck my health! Let’s make some money!” But things change.
